Shoppers will be devastated to hear Morrisons in Hounslow West is up for closure, the company confirmed on Wednesday (January 13).

The supermarket giant said the store on Cavendish Parade, off Bath Road, Hounslow, is one of seven in the country set to close, but the only one in London.

The news comes almost one year after the supermarket giant announced the proposed closure of 10 loss-making stores in January 2015 , in which the Hounslow store was saved.

MP for Feltham and Heston Seema Malhotra who is a regular shopper at the store was shocked to learn about the proposed closure.

Ms Malhotra said: “This is devastating news and will come as a shock to the local community.

“As a regular shopper at Morrisons, I know how highly the store is regarded and its place in Hounslow West.

“I will be urgently meeting with the Morrisons management and the local staff teams as part of the consultation period to see what alternatives there might be to closure and how we can work together going forward in the interests of the community and the staff whose jobs will now be at risk.

“I would be grateful for anyone would like to be involved to email me at seema.malhotra.mp@parliament.uk.”

The MP hopes to meet with management and local people in the very near future to see if there is an alternative, and if not, ensure all staff are supported to find a new job.

Morrisons has said it will look to reduce the risk of redundancies and relocate as many staff as possible around other parts of the business.

A Morrisons spokesperson said: “We have looked at how we can improve the Hounslow store’s long-term viability.

“Unfortunately we have not found a way to turn this store around and are therefore proposing its closure.

“We are consulting with colleagues and unions and we will be discussing how to reduce redundancies and redeploy colleagues around our business.”
