Norwood Green's annual village day has been put in jeopardy as a travellers camp in Southall grew to more than 20.

Around five caravans were camped on the green on Monday (June 27) and were confined to one of the corners, but that number has now swelled to four time this number and the camp has sprawled across the green.

The travellers, who are thought to have set up camp on Norwood Green after moving on from Ealing Common and Hanger Lane, have also tied up horses to the trees on the green.

The annual Norwood Green Village Day is due to go ahead on Saturday (July 9), but residents fear that it will now be cancelled as a result of the camp.

Ealing Council and the police have said that they had been engaging with the people on the site and are monitoring the situation and will take enforcement action if necessary, although residents fear it will take a prolonged period of time.

One concerned Norwood Green resident, who didn't wish to be named, said: "I have lived here for over 20 years and I have never known something like this before.

"It's quite disgraceful, the rubbish is already mounting up on the green which is the centre point for our community.

"It's also looking likely that the Village Day will be cancelled as a result, which is something we look forward to every year and it pains me that we won't be able to hold this year as a result of the camp."

Other residents took to Twitter to complain about the camp which has increased in size as the week has progressed.
