More than 1,100 Met Police officers physically assaulted during first half of 2017

A total of 2,600 Metropolitan Police officers were injured while on duty during the first half of 2017, getwestlondon can reveal.

New figures show a rise from 2,467 during the same time last year, with an increase of 289 injuries as a result of being assaulted by a person.

Almost half of the officers assaulted between January 1 and June 30 this year were physically assaulted by a person, 1,111 in total, compared to 822 during the same period in 2016.

A Met Police spokesman said the force has a duty of care for all of its employees: "We are committed to supporting and promoting the positive wellbeing among staff and officers.

"Policing is challenging, however, all policing activities are risk assessed and appropriate mitigation measures implemented to reduce the risk of injury, as far as is it reasonably practicable to do so."

The figures released by Metropolitan Police relate to physical injuries sustained whilst officers are on duty, ranging from assault, trips, falls and being hit by moving vehicles.

When injuries occur, the Metropolitan Police provides officers with comprehensive occupational support services as well as offering access to additional health services to assist with providing personalised care.

Metropolitan Police say the welfare of their officers will always remain a priority.
