The Metropolitan Police have confirmed there have been a number of fatalities following a huge fire that tore through a North Kensington tower block.

The statement follows on from one by the London Fire Commissioner who also confirmed the tragic news after a blaze engulfed the Grenfell Tower in the early hours of Wednesday (June 14).

Hundreds of firefighters tackled the fire which ripped through nearly every single floor of the tower.

Police were called at 1.16am to reports of a large fire at a block of flats at the Lancaster West Estate.

Officers were sent to the scene to assist the London Fire Brigade (LFB) and the London Ambulance Service (LAS).

Police have confirmed the evacuation process is ongoing.

More than 50 patients have been taken to five hospitals across London, the LAS has confirmed.

It is not known how many have died.

Commander Stuart Cundy, from the Metropolitan Police, said: "All the emergency services and other agencies continue to work together at the scene.

"I can confirm there have been a number of fatalities and others receiving medical care. We will be soon making contact with next of kin.
