Hundreds of people gathered at a memorial tournament for a promising young sportsman killed during a night out.

Around 25 teams took to the pitch in tribute to Jagdip Randhawa, of Cranford, who died in October 2011 after being attacked by a professional boxer in Leeds, where the 19-year-old was studying English at university.

The seven-a-side football competition took place on Sunday (August 9), at his old school Cranford Community College, where he had been head boy.

Indian Gymkhana beat Harlington FC 2-0 in the final.

It was the third year running the tournament had been organised by friends of the popular teenager, who was an aspiring writer and gifted American Football player.

Jagdip's sister Manjinder Randhawa said: "The family would like to express their gratitude and thanks to everyone who helped organise and participated in the tournament.

"Jag was a keen sportsman and would be very proud of his friends for doing something so positive.

"Each event like this helps us to commemorate the life he should have had, we look forward to an even bigger event next year."

Mr Randhawa had just started the second year of his English degree at Leeds University, for whom he played American Football, when he died after being assaulted.

Professional boxer Clifton Ty Mitchell, of Derby, was jailed for seven years in July 2012 after being convicted of Mr Randhawa's manslaughter.
