Harefield Dogs Trust say they've found Britain's smiliest dog who grins at everyone she meets.

Whenever she receives friendly attention or cuddles, 10-year-old Belle seems to beam with happiness and lets out a big smile.

She lives at the Dogs Trust centre in Harefield and carers say she is one-of-a-kind.

The Dogs Trust say it appears the cute Staffordshire Bull Terrier cross “can't help but smile” when she meets people and her carers believe that she may have taught herself to smile because it gets such a good response from humans.

Belle may have learnt to smile, when adoring humans smiled back, laughed and gave her friendly attention - so she continues to grin whenever she meets someone.

Cute pictures of Belle show just how happy she gets when given cuddles as she lets out a beaming smile while being stroked by carers.

Belle previously lived with a family for six years but was handed in to Dogs Trust when her owners could no longer care for her.

Manager Richard Moore says the centre has taken care of over 10,000 dogs - yet none have had a winning smile like Belle.

Mr Moore said: "Belle is a friendly, happy, outgoing dog who smiles at everyone she meets.

"We’ve had over 10,000 dogs through our doors since we opened but I can’t remember a dog with a smile like Belle.

"She gets so happy when she meets someone. Not only does she let out a beaming smile but she has this great little jig that she does.

"She doesn't just jig her tail but she jigs her whole body, it's brilliant.

"It doesn't happen very often with dogs, dogs with longer faces have been known to look like they’re smiling but I haven't seen any that look as happy as Belle.

"Certainly some dogs ‘smile’ at us on a regular occasion, although in many cases an apparent smile is actually an 'appeasement' behaviour – in other words, the dog is saying 'I'm a little bit unsure about what's going on'.

"But in Belle’s case, she just can't help 'pulling a face' when she gets excited about seeing humans – and being a Staffy, her muscular jaws mean the sides of her mouth are drawn out, giving her a winning smile every time.

Mr Moore explains that the dogs at Harefield are trained positively and Belle always pays attention to the reaction she gets.

He added: “In most cases it involves a laugh and a cuddle from us humans!

"She’s learnt that this particular expression, in other words her smile, always gets a great response, so she continues to do it.

"We hope she brings many smiles to any prospective new owners."
