The Mayor of London has publicly called on the government to hold up its end of the bargain on keeping the city and its residents safe.

The statement came after the publication of the Harris review commissioned by Sadiq Khan into London's preparedness to deal with the terror threat.

During the period of the review, which published its recommendations on Wednesday (October 25), London has been rocked by terror attacks in Westminster Bridge, London Bridge and Borough Market, Finsbury Park and Parsons Green .

The Mayor claims that two-thirds of the recommendations in the review have already been implemented by London's authorities but accused the government of "dragging their feet" when it comes to matters under their control.

London's emergency services and Metropolitan Police , alongside City Hall, have implemented a new group to strengthen security on the River Thames, increased training capacity for armed officers and implemented Project Servator which involves deploying officers across the capital to deter and detect criminal and terrorist activity.

Sadiq Khan has called on the government to "step up" and implement the recommendations directed at them in the review by Lord Harris.

The review calls on the Home Office to publish its new CONTEST counter terror strategy, confirm funding for permanent barriers to protect ceremonial events like Trooping the Colour as well as increasing funding for Counter Terror Security advisers specifically in London.

Lord Harris also recommended the Home Office create a compulsory assessment of the resilience of existing buildings against attacks.

The Department of Health has been asked to increase community mental health services to support vulnerable people at risk of radicalisation, tying in with the Mayor's demands to have more devolved power over the NHS in London.

Mr Khan said: “In the face of a growing threat to London and other global cities, I am doing everything in my power to ensure our capital is as prepared as possible to respond to terrorism.

"Our police officers and emergency services do a fantastic job, working tirelessly every day to keep us safe.

"We have worked extremely hard together to deliver on the recommendations made by Lord Harris and to make London safer, whilst also coping with four barbaric terror attacks and the tragic fire at Grenfell Tower this year.

“We have implemented more than two thirds of Lord Harris’s recommendations, but there is still work to do.

"The Government needs to put Londoners' safety first: it must step up, stop dragging its feet and take urgent action on the remaining recommendations.

"They must also provide the proper funding our police and other emergency services need.

"I have made it clear time and time again that the Met’s budget is on a cliff-edge, and have done everything in my power to provide the police with extra funding.

"If the Government continues to ignore the stark facts, then all the great work we have achieved together to keep Londoners safe from terrorism could be put in jeopardy.”
