A smoking manhole caused traffic chaos in Brentford yesterday as Kew Bridge was closed to traffic.

Firefighters were called to reports of a fire at the manhole in Kew Road yesterday (Monday, November 30) at 3.39pm.

A spokeswoman for the London Fire Brigade said it was understood the underground electrical supply had blown.

She said two engines and 10 firefighters from Chiswick fire station attended the scene but the blaze was out by the time they arrived.

Kew Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions while firefighters, police and engineers dealt with the situation, causing lengthy tailbacks during rush hour.

There was initially some speculation on Twitter that a bomb was responsible for ripping a hole in the road but members of the public were soon reassured and advised to seek alternative routes where possible.
