An elderly man was rescued from a flat fire in Acton believed to have been caused by smoking materials.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus rescued the man from sheltered housing in Crown Street in the early hours of Tuesday morning (March 10).

He was taken to hospital by London Ambulance Service.

The living room of his third-floor flat was partly damaged by the blaze. The cause of the fire is under investigation but is believed to have been caused by smoking materials.

Two fire engines and around 14 firefighters and officers from Acton and Chiswick fire stations attended the incident.

The London Fire Brigade was called at around 1.50am and the fire was under control at 3am, a spokesman confirmed.
