A man arrested outside the Houses of Parliament for carrying a knife has been detained under the Mental Health Act.

Eniola Mustafa Aminu, of Greenwich, was arrested on Friday June 16 near the Carriage Gates entrance to the Palace of Westminster after being found with a kitchen knife.

The incident was just yards away from where PC Keith Palmer was stabbed to death less than three months earlier in the Westminster terror attack.

The 27-year-old was sentenced to a hospital detention order under section 37 of the Mental Health Act 1983 at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday (September 19).

He will be treated at the Bracton Centre, a medium security mental health unit in Kent.

He was charged and pleaded guilty to possession of an offensive weapon, at the same court.

An additional charge of assault on a constable in the execution of his duty was discontinued, the Metropolitan Police said.

Police ruled out terror as the motivation behind this incident in Westminster.

Judge Nicholas Loraine-Smith said: "Every psychiatrist who has seen you since you committed this offence agrees that you were mentally unwell at the time you committed it and you are still mentally unwell.

"Your mental illness began to show itself last year and resulted in your detention under the mental health act of three to four months this year.

"He added: "The court is satisfied that you are suffering from a mental disorder of a nature or degree which makes it appropriate for you to be detained in a hospital for medical treatment.

"I make an order under the Mental Health Act 1983 Section 37 for your detention until you are better, then you can gradually be released back into the community."
