A police chase came to a nasty halt after the pursued man crashed into a lorry and died at the scene on the A316.

The southbound carriageway of the A1316 remains closed after the car collided with the lorry at around 4.28am on Wednesday (February 8), near Sunbury.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: "The car was being pursued by police at the end of the collision after it had failed to stop.

"The emergency services attended and the driver, a man, was pronounced dead at the scene."

The next of kin have been informed and the reason for pursuit has not been shared by officers.

The force said the Directorate of Professional Standards has been informed, as well as the Independent Police Complaints Commission who will investigate the incident.

The A316 has remained closed since this morning and Transport for London have reported they can be "expected to remain closed for the rest of the day".

Commuters have seen delays of between 20-45 minutes as traffic is diverted away from the closed stretch.
