An elderly man died after a "hit-and-run" which saw the driver abandon the car in a nearby street after failing to stop, police have said.

The Metropolitan Police was called by the London Ambulance Service at 9.27pm on Saturday (March 4) to reports of a silver car in collision with a pedestrian in Hammersmith Road and Edith Road junction.

The male was taken to a central London hospital where he died at 1.15am the following day.

His next of kin have been informed.

A spokesman for the Met said: "The driver failed to stop at the scene.

"Officers have now located the car which is a silver BMW 5-series and not a Mercedes as previously thought.

"The car was found on Stanwick Road.

The circle shows where the collision took place and the red mark shows where the car was later abandoned, according to police

"Officers would like to speak with anyone who saw the collision, or who saw the car leave the scene.

"They are also particularly keen to speak with anyone who saw the car being abandoned."

Detectives from the Met's Roads and Transport Policing Command are investigating and anyone with information is asked to contact the Serious Collision Investigation Unit's witness appeal line on 020 8543 5157 or via 101.
