Armed police have arrested a man carrying knives near Downing Street.

It happened at 2.22pm on Thursday (April 27) afternoon in Parliament Street, at the junction with Parliament Square.

Mirror Online reports the arrested man was carrying a “backpack of knives”.

Police say a man in his late 20s has been detained under the Terrorism Act and is in custody in a south London police station.

Scotland Yard continued: “The man, aged in his late twenties, was arrested on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon and on suspicion of the commission, preparation and instigation of acts of terrorism. Knives have been recovered from him.”

No-one has been hurt, and detectives from the Counter Terrorism Command are continuing their investigation.

The Met added: “As a result of this arrest there is no immediate known threat.”

London Mayor Sadiq Khan tweeted soon after: “Thanks to all officers who dealt swiftly & professionally with the incident in Whitehall. The Met Commissioner has briefed me on the arrest.”

The incident comes just over a month after the Westminster Terror attack, which say Khalid Masood drive a car at high speed at people walking on Westminster Bridge, killing four pedestrians, and injuring many more.

He then fatally stabbed PC Keith Palmer before he was shot dead by armed police.
