A campaign to make London the world's first 'national park city' has been hailed a "game-changer".

Hounslow Green Party this week become the latest organisation to back proposals to protect and promote the capital's many green spaces by awarding it the new status.

Nico Fekete, spokesman for the group, said: "This would be a game-changer. We love the idea of treating London with the same care and love we treat our countryside.

"Hounslow residents would benefit so much from this initiative, that is why we are supporting it.

"A London National City Park turns the table on planning policy in England, encouraging development on existing built areas instead of paving open spaces.

"Hounslow could keep the best of both worlds: its open park suburban lifestyle a stone's throw from London Piccadilly."

The campaign for national park status is spearheaded by Ealing geographer Dan Raven-Ellison, who has said it would cost nothing and help conserve London's natural beauty while promoting greater use of the capital's open spaces.

It was officially launched in July and has been endorsed by celebrities including TV presenter Stephen Fry and the architect Sir Terry Farrell.

Should the bid prove successful, London would become the UK's 16th national park, joining areas of natural beauty like the Lake District.
