A minicab which broke down on the M4 in west London caused rush hour chaos on Thursday (May 18) morning.

The private hire vehicle caused one of two lanes to close on the M4 stretching from near J1 Chiswick Roundabout to J4 (Heathrow Spur/Uxbridge).

The incident caused tailbacks up to six miles long on the M4 and had a knock on effect on the parallel running A4.

London-bound traffic only began to ease at around 10am.

M4 traffic was caused by this broken down PHV...NOT a taxi

Highways England traffic officers made their way down to the motorway around 6.30am.

Motorists were faced with long delays eastbound before J2 A4 (Brentford) through to J4 for several hours.

It also led to the closure of one lane for at least two hours but it seems drivers were more frustrated with reports saying a taxi had broken down rather than a minicab.

@afcbrad tweeted: "m4 traffic is because of a broken down uber. Please do not call them a taxi."

Meanwhile @gonewaysouth tweeted: "M4 broken down vehicle is a mini cab NOT a taxi, please amend your traffic bulletins. Thanks."

Normal traffic conditions were expected at around 10.15am according to Highways England.
