The gorilla that escaped at London Zoo on Thursday evening (October 13) was captured after being shot with a tranquilliser dart, according to the Metropolitan Police .

Reports the animal had escaped first surfaced at around 5.30pm when visitors were told to get inside.

A video emerged showing armed police appearing to search the complex for the loose gorilla.

Helicopters were spotted hovering above the zoo in Regent's Park.

A spokesperson for London Zoo said: “ZSL is managing an incident.”

While a police spokesperson added: “Police were called by security at Regent's Park at 5.17pm to reports of an ongoing incident.”

The incident was bought under control at around 7pm after the gorilla is believed to have been shot with a tranquiliser dart.

One visitor tweeted: "Gorrilla on the loose? Huddling in a building at the London Zoo after staff told us to get into a building."
