Temperatures are predicted to soar this week, with London set to comfortably reach double figures - hotter even than the Canary Islands.

Highs of 24 degrees Celsius are forecast for the city on Saturday and Sunday, warmer than holiday destinations such as Lanzarote and Tenerife.

A Met Office spokesman said the weather will be "noticeably warmer inland", although "isolated thunderstorms" are possible.

The hotter weather make a startling change from the snow and sleet which fell this month, with the increase in temperature 7 degrees more than the average for this time of year.
