Rail union ASLEF has confirmed that the planned 24-hour Tube strikes on Wednesday (August 5) will go ahead.

Tube workers are expected to strike from 9.30pm on Wednesday until 9pm on Thursday (August 6).

Transport for London will be closing down the Tubes from 6.30pm.

The union met with London Underground (LU) for talks at the conciliation service Acas on Friday (July 31) to try to come to an agreement over plans to launch a new all-night service on selected lines.

Workers closed the Tube network completely in the first industrial action, on July 8, and now plan the same disruption during a fresh 24-hour walkout.

London Underground (LU) made a revised offer which was discussed by union leaders on Monday (August 3).

But an ASLEF union statement said: "The overwhelming view of our members is that this offer is not acceptable.

"The main concern is the complete lack of firm commitments on work/life balance for train drivers. Our members want guarantees on the number of weekend rest days they will have under both the interim and long term arrangements for night tube.

"Vague phrases like 'will seek to mitigate' and 'will explore' are simply unconvincing."

The four unions – Aslef, Unite, RMT and TSSA – are unhappy at the pay and conditions in connection with the Night Tube, which is set to be launched on September 12.

The Aslef statement added: "We would be prepared to continue discussions to try to find common ground, but senior management are insistent that new rosters will be issued this week so that Night Tube starts on September 12.

"The sensible option would be to postpone the launch date to allow for an agreed way forward to be reached.

"They are insisting that it must be accepted as it stands.

"This leaves us with no other choice than to go ahead with strike action from 9.30pm on Wednesday (August 5).

"We genuinely regret the disruption this will cause."

Update: The deal that rail unions rejected

Talks are still under way attempting to resolve disputes with the unions.

An Acas spokesman said:"Talks at Acas adjourned today without reaching any agreement on the pay and night tube dispute.

"The parties have agreed to return to Acas for more talks on these issues and we are in the process of making arrangements, although any meetings are unlikely to take place until next week.

"A separate but related stream of talks on Fit For Future Stations will take place tomorrow."

The news came on the same day First Great Western staff announced they would be striking over August bank holiday weekend.
