London is the most expensive place to rent in the country - and the prices are still rapidly rising.

With an average rent of £1,425 a month, rents in the capital rose on average 2.3% between December and January.

Many Londoners are forces to live in shared accommodation due to the spiralling cost of living in the city.

Is it surprising, therefore, that renters in west London are being evicted from their homes at a record rate.

Figures, released by HomeLet, show that it's not just house prices that are rising at a crazy rate but rental prices too.

In the UK, rent went up on average 2.5% between December 2014 and this January - that's around £22 a month.

Despite London being the most expensive place to rent, those facing the biggest rise last month were those in the East Midlands and Scotland, where rents soared by 6.2% and 5.68% respectively.

In the North East, the average rent is just £518 - the cheapest in the UK by far and just 36% of the cost of renting in the capital.

Between January 2014 and last month, rents rose by 13.4% in London.
