On November 26, the Mayor of London Sadiq Khan set out plans for improved fire safety in his London Plan and said the "safety of Londoners" is his first priority.

"It is absolutely essential that we learn every lesson we can from the terrible Grenfell tragedy, and do everything within our power to make sure nothing like it can happen again," he said.

"I have repeatedly called on the government to ensure that the Grenfell Public Inquiry reports as soon as possible and that the review of fire safety regulations is as full and effective as possible.

"I have asked the Prime Minister to work with me to ensure social housing residents are given a proper voice in future decisions.

"It is also completely unacceptable that just two per cent of tower blocks are fitted with sprinklers, and today I am backing the Mirror’s admirable campaign to install them in social housing tower blocks across the country."

"I am doing everything I can to ensure Londoners are better protected in the wake of the Grenfell fire"

He added: "My new draft London Plan will, for the first time, require that the ‘highest standards’ of safety are set out at the planning stages of new developments in the capital, so that they can be incorporated into the design and build, and to give Londoners confidence that they will be as protected as possible should an emergency unfold.

"I am doing everything I can to ensure Londoners are better protected in the wake of the Grenfell fire, and today I am calling on the Government once again to step up and do more."
