The London Eye beamed out bright yellow lights onto the River Thames on Bank Holiday Monday in a show of support for lifeboat charity the RNLI.

It marked the beginning of the RNLI's Mayday campaign , which calls on people to "Do your bit, fund our kit", with cash raised going towards RNLI kit for its volunteer lifeboat crews.

The charity's national annual fundraising campaign runs throughout May with, events being held across the country.

RNLI lifeboats launched more than 750 times last year, rescuing nearly 200 people and saving 32 lives in total.

London Eye general manager Sunny Jouhal said: "We are delighted to support this year’s Mayday campaign by turning the London Eye yellow.

"Helping to raise awareness and funds for the RNLI’s crucial kit is a worthy cause, and one particularly appropriate for us given our location on the bank of the River Thames in the heart of the capital."

It is not the only show of support from inside the capital after the West End stars of STOMP swapped their dancing shoes for bright yellow wellies to raise awareness for the campaign.

RNLI boats monitor the waters of the River Thames everyday, with stations in Chiswick , Teddington and around the corner from the London Eye at Tower Lifeboat Station, Victoria Embankment - which launched 512 times in 2016 making it the busiest RNLI station.

Cub Llewelyn-Davies added: "Our lifeboat crews in London launched 758 times, rescuing 195 people and saving 32 lives last year."

The RNLI hopes to raise £750,000 from the campaign to fund lifesaving kit which includes a pair of wellies costing £54, lifejackets which cost £458 each and safety helmets costing £263 each.

Cub Llewelyn-Davies, RNLI community fundraising manager for London, added: "Our crews rely on lifesaving kit like their yellow wellies, lifejackets and helmets, when they go out in all weathers to save lives.

"From sponsored bike rides and welly walks, to running a bake sale, there are all sorts of ways to raise money for the RNLI."
