With voters across the London boroughs making their way to polling stations to select a new Mayor for the city, something else has taken the attention away from the candidates.

Dogs at polling stations have once again stolen the hearts of many voters, who took to social media to document their delight at seeing the pooches.

The hashtag #dogsatpollingstations emerged during the 2015 General Election and has once again found its way to the trending list on Twitter.

Voter Ian Mantgani said his day was "made" after seeing a dog at the polling station

Whilst some posted pictures of the dogs, others described the hashtag as the "best thing to come out of the day", taking the opportunity to put politics aside for a "much better option".

But it wasn't just dogs that got the attention - a few cats got in on the act to show their political alliances, such as this Forest Gate moggy.

One even made its mark on a kitty ballot paper, firmly placing its paw on the chosen party
