Commuting is part of most Londoners’ daily lives but what is it really costing the average employee?

More than 1,000 Londoners took totaljobs’ Commuter Calculator to discover how much they’d spend and what they could be doing instead.

The study found that the average London commuter makes a daily round trip of 13.42 miles.

They will travel 141,427 miles by the time they retire, or 161 times the distance from Land’s End to John O’ Groats.

Only 7% of the London population live and work in the same borough, making long commutes inevitable.

Londoners will also spend almost a year of their lives (363 days) commuting.

London workers have shorter commute times than the rest of the UK on average at 48 minutes vs. 53 minutes.

By the time they retire, Londoners will have spent a whole year of their lives commuting – that’s enough time to read the entire Game of Thrones series 88 times.

'I could rent three flats in Barcelona for the price of one in London'

The average UK commuter outside of the capital will travel considerably more over their lifetime (337,249 miles), but Londoners’ cost per mile is almost twice as high at 47p vs. 24p.

As a result, commuters in London will spend a grand total of £113,536 by the time they retire, or enough to buy six brand new Ford Fiestas , or one Porsche 911 with change leftover.

Wouldn't you rather have one of these?

Among those commenting on the totalobs site was London worker Julia Lirio. He demonstrated the financial impact of commuting in the capital, saying: “Instead of dinners out, we cooked, instead of concerts, our weekends where spent in parks, instead of the Tube, I started cycling”.

Similarly, extreme commuter Jorge Bravo-Pratscher chose to commute from Spain instead of living in the capital : “I could rent three flats in Barcelona for the price of one in London!”.

Commuters living outside of London and travelling in every day seem to suffer the most from their commute.

With an average time of 74 minutes and monthly spend of £305, they have the longest and most expensive commute.
