"Unusual amount of cars here last night"

Resident Fiona Gaiger said she saw an “unusual amount of cars” at the scene last night.

There was an ambulance here first this morning, then an ambulance car, then two police cars, then another two. Then they put up the cordon, that’s when I knew it was pretty serious.

Police come here quite often, there have been drownings in the past and there are often police helicopters.

She said she understands the man’s body was found in the woodland between the car park and river.

Resident reaction

A resident in the area, who asked not to be named, said:

It was awful, I saw them arrive and at first I thought they were from the Swan Sanctuary down the road looking for a bird, then I realised it was an ambulance crew.

I saw a white sheet tied up by the ambulance crew, I assume to cover something or to mark a spot. I saw them waiting and then the police came.

A body was lifted from what looked like the bank onto a stretcher. They were there for a couple of hours.
