With just under one week to go, the leader board has shifted as Hounslow and Ealing battle it out to win Beat the Street.

A final push is being made to clock up more miles walking, running or cycling as previous winners St Mary’s RC Primary School in Isleworth, and Khalsa Primary School in Southall, lead the way.

The six-week real-life health activity game which has attracted around 40,000 residents to get fit will come to a close on Wednesday (November 2), but not before some ghoulish fun along the way.

Turning the streets into a fun, free game, families pick up cards and fobs at libraries, leisure centres and schools to tap against beeping and flashing "beat boxes" across the two boroughs collecting miles to see who can travel the furthest.

In five weeks both areas have travelled a total of 133,000 miles - just over 600 times the length of the River Thames.

Councillor Corinna Smart, cabinet member for public health and leisure at Hounslow council, said: “The response to Beat the Street has been incredible over the past few weeks with local residents of all ages getting behind the walking and cycling initiative.

"During the competition we have seen proactive teams climb up the leaderboards – so make sure you make one final push to help your chosen school, community group or business win some amazing prizes.“

The game has been funded by Hounslow council and Ealing council with the aim of encouraging residents into physical activity.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor, cabinet member for health and adults services at Ealing council, added: “It’s great that so many children and families were able to take part in Beat the Street.

"The aim has always been to highlight how easy it is to take up walking and other activities in a fun motivated way.

"I hope many will continue like I have on a daily basis. Over the coming months, engagement teams will continue to work with local residents in both Hounslow and Southall to make sure players continue to stay active and healthy.”
