A man from Ladbroke Grove accused of smuggling cocaine into the country through wooden statues has appeared in court.

Darius Atiba Williams, from Bonchurch Road, denied a charge of importing Class A drugs during an appearance at Croydon Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday (December 21).

The 33-year-old was arrested with Ted Dexter Frederick, 46 and of no fixed abode, after an National Crime Agency (NCA) operation in Edmonton, north London.

It followed the seizure at Gatwick Airport of four statues on December 16 which had been shipped from Trinidad.

Border Force officers X-rayed the items and found an estimated 20kg of cocaine hidden inside.

Frederick also entered a not guilty plea.

The pair were remanded in custody and will appear at Croydon Crown Court on January 25.
