Labour has retained its council seat in a Brentford by-election sparked by the resignation of newly-elected MP Ruth Cadbury.

Guy Lambert received more than half of the votes yesterday (Thursday, July 9), finishing 26% clear of his closest rival, Conservative Patrick Barr.

The result means Labour continue to hold all three seats in the ward, which has been a traditional stronghold for the party.

Ruth Cadbury had held the seat for many years but resigned from Hounslow Council after being elected as MP for Brentford & Isleworth in May, saying she could not fulfil both roles.

The turnout was just under 22%, with the Green Party finishing third and the Liberal Democrats just ahead of UKIP in fourth.

In the 2014 local election, the three Labour candidates for Brentford received a combined 57.8% of the votes.

Mr Lambert is a semi-retired IT worker, who lives at Brentford Dock. The father-of-one is treasurer of the local credit union Thamesbank, volunteers for Brentford Chamber of Commerce and is closely involved with Isleworth Public Hall.

During the campaign he said he opposed controversial proposals to allow a new primary school to build a permanent home in Brent Lea Recreation Ground.
