One hundred staff and students were forced to evacuate a university building after it went up in flames on Thursday (May 18) afternoon.

Ten fire engines tackle the blaze at part of a store room in a sub basement of the Strand campus of King's College London.

Six fire engines and 35 firefighters were initially sent to the scene but another four were called to the fire by 3.15pm.

A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: "Fire crew from Euston, Islington, Bethnal Green, Soho, Dowgate and Chelsea fire stations are at the scene.

"The cause of the fire is currently unknown."

Just one hour before the university blaze broke out, fire crews were sent to Marylebone, after 40 worried residents called 999 after seeing a fire .

The brigade warned those near the area in Westminster to avoid Strand if possible.

A King’s College London spokesperson said: “A fire has broken out in the basement of the Macadam building but is now under control.

"The building has been evacuated. Fire services remain in attendance on site.

"King’s students and staff are asked to avoid the Macadam and Chesham buildings in Surrey Street on the Strand Campus until further notice.”
