Kind-hearted cops in Hounslow dug into their own pockets to help out an elderly man who fell victim to rogue roofers.

The 82-year-old man was duped into handing over £500 to a pair of conmen who promised to repair the roof of his Heston home, but instead stole lead from the property.

When members of the Heston East neighbourhood policing team visited to check up on him, they found he was incredibly shaken and noticed his fridge and cupboards were almost bare.

Officers were so concerned for his well-being they spent their own money buying food to replenish his supplies and ensure he didn't go hungry.

'Remain vigilant when dealing with cold callers'

Inspector Chris Brown, neighbourhood inspector for Heston, Cranford and Osterley , said: "Our officers have demonstrated that policing is not just about making arrests, it's about taking care of our community and making a difference to people's lives.

"I remind everyone to be vigilant when dealing with cold callers who offer to take on work. I urge that people use a reputable company and obtain quotes. If in doubt, please contact your local safer neighbourhood team."

The con men are described as two white men, aged in their 30s or 40s. One of them was of medium build and had short curly hair. There is no further description of the other man.

Anyone with information, or who suspects they or someone they know has been targeted by unscrupulous cold callers, can call police on the non-emergency number 101.
