Kensington MP Victoria Borwick is resigning as a ward councillor in Kensington and Chelsea.

She is one of two councillors along with Joanna Gardner who will step down from the Abingdon ward, triggering a potential by-elections on the same date as the Greater London Authority (GLA) and Mayor of London elections .

The two Conservative councillors on Kensington and Chelsea Council have 30 years of Town Hall experience between them.

Cllr Gardner has served since 1998, while Lady Borwick, also a GLA member, was first elected in 2002. She became MP following the surprise resignation of Sir Malcolm Rifkind , after he was caught up in cash-for-access claims.

When she was announced as the Conservative candidate for the General Election Lady Borwick said she would have to consider standing again as a ward councillor, and also stated her intentions to step down as a GLA member if elected MP.

Anyone wishing to stand for election must complete nomination packs before the deadline in April. They are available from the Election Office at Kensington Town Hall in Hornton Street or by calling 020 7361 3444, and must be returned to the town hall by 4pm on April 7.

If the election is contested the poll will take place on May 5 between 7am and 10pm.
