A fundraising page set up to replace a dedicated park ranger's stolen trail camera in Ealing more than doubled its initial target.
The Borough of Ealing is home to some of London's biggest green spaces, with a team of six rangers looking after its 20 parks – including Manor House Grounds and Hanwell Meadows.
On Saturday (October 28), park ranger James Morton found that someone had taken his wildlife trail camera which had been left attached to a tree at Jubilee Meadow.
This, according to the organiser of the JustGiving page James Morley, was the owner's personal property, which “shows his dedication to his job”.
Fundraising success stories
After the page was set up, the link was shared 80 times on Facebook and social media as members of the community backed the fundraising.
Within 24 hours, the initial £105 target was blown out of the water, with £220 being raised by 27 kindhearted supporters.
Updating his page, Mr Morley said: “Thanks to the wonderful and lightning-fast generosity of the local community, we have well exceeded the target.
“James has suggested that if we get enough then we could buy a second camera to give to the rangers team in Ealing.”
Park Ranger Mr Morton added: “I posted on Hanwell Friends Facebook group yesterday with the very slim hope that I might somehow see my own camera again.
“It never occurred to me that the local community would immediately club together and buy me a replacement camera.
“I am very touched by the kindness you have shown, thank you. It's a powerful reminder why it's such a joy to live and work in this area.”
Donors left messages of support on the JustGiving page, with one writing “great community spirit” and another saying “looking forward to seeing the local wildlife pics”.
