It’s important when you’re looking for a new job, or even thinking of changing careers, to have a rough idea of what you might earn in a different industry.

Often, the careers that can earn you the most come as a surprise, and it’s certainly not the case that all good jobs require a university education.

However, they do require a high level of specialist skill, hard work and motivation.

Supermarket Manager

Many people associate supermarkets with low-paying jobs, but that’s not always the case.

An individual store can turn over hundreds of thousands of pounds in a week, so ensuring everything runs smoothly is of paramount importance, according to the Liverpool Echo .

Aldi

At Aldi, store managers can start on £43,000, rising to £56,000 after four years, though the role requires a 48-hour work week. For graduates, there’s even better news. Aldi’s graduate area manager programme kicks off on £42,000, climbing to £70,000 after four years.

Field Sales Representative

Products don’t get into shops by themselves, and big brands such as Pepsi, Coca Cola and Imperial Tobacco use field sales representatives to flog their products to store owners up and down the country.

Often, the jobs come with a company car and mobile, start on around £25,000 and represent a great route to one day becoming a sales director, or simply get in with a large company.

Make-up and hairstylist freelancers can earn a high wage

Freelance Hairstylist or Make-up Artist

As is the case in lots of low margin businesses, salaries in salons can be poor, but there are increasing opportunities outside. E-commerce clothing sites pay around £250 a day to hair and make-up artists who can make a model look stunning, while work for big brands brings in a similar rate.

PA to a CEO

Being a chief executive is stressful, and being a PA to one isn’t a cakewalk either. Arranging people’s diaries can be tougher than it sounds, especially when it seems like there are five requests for every meeting slot. Travel arrangements are complex, and expected to happen without a hitch, and you have to ensure you show polite professionalism at all times.

Offshore drilling worker

Working on an offshore rig entails long hours and a substantial amount of time away from the family, but it can be immensely financially rewarding.

The national careers service lists a wage of up to £50,000 but workers on the North Sea have reported earning six figure sums.

Train driver jobs are highly sought after

Train Driver

Train drivers can expect upwards of £40,000 for a four day week, while Eurostar drivers can earn more than £60,000.

But there’s a catch – train companies are inundated with hundreds of applications for every vacancy.

Midwife

According to the Royal College of Midwives, the starting salary of £21,388 can almost quadruple to £80,000 if an individual goes on to be a senior manager or midwife consultant.
