Plans to close job centres across the country have been announced, with six of the branches in west London earmarked for job losses.

The Department of Work and Pensions (DWP) announced on Friday (December 27) staff and facilities will be merged into larger centres.

Affected branches include Hammersmith, Kilburn , Neasden , Southall , Westminster, Acton and Hounslow , with 750 job losses country-wide expected.

There will only be public consultations in cases where Jobcentres are being moved more than three miles or 20 minutes' journey away.

A total of 78 smaller job centres across Britain will merge with bigger offices, with a further 50 moving into council offices, according to the DWP.

The move is said to save the DWP around £1.8 million a year

Around 27 back offices will also close in the move, which is forecast to save £180m a year.

The Public and Commercial Services (PCS) union, which represents DWP staff, warned jobless people will have to travel further to sign on.

PCS general secretary, Mark Serwotka, said: "Jobcentres provide a lifeline for unemployed people, and forcing them to travel further is not only unfair, it undermines support to get them back to work.

"We are opposed to these closures and will vigorously fight any attempt to force DWP workers out of their jobs."

Kilburn resident, Janet Gladhill, expressed her views on the proposal after hearing the changes.

The 57-year-old said: "They didn't think for one second how this is going to affect families.

"Everything is getting harder enough as it is, but this is just careless."

Claiming disability benefits, the Brent resident added: "It's already difficult for me to get here, how is it going to be okay for me to go further out?"

The move has come because a 20-year contract for most of the DWP's 900 sites with property firm Telereal Trillium expires in March 2018.
