Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt failed to show in Ealing on Thursday (November 19) as hundreds of protesters gathered outside a venue he was due to attend as a guest speaker.

His no-show came on the same day that 98% of junior doctors voted in favour of full strike action.

Mr Hunt was due to speak at the Southall Conservative Club for a dinner with members of the Ealing Southall Conservative Association, who had booked the venue for the talk.

His plans led hundreds of protesters, many from campaign group Ealing Save Our NHS, to organise a protest to oppose his plans for the health service.

But the day before his talk, he informed SCC that he would not be coming.

Jim Baker, a steward at SCC, said: "He did not show yesterday (November 20). I was not aware until the day before.

"We had another guest speaker."

Protesters fear his plans could abolish overtime rates for evenings and Saturday's for junior doctors.

An estimated 16,000 protesters marched through Westminster on October 17 to urge Mr Hunt to scrap his proposals.

That prompted him to write to junior doctors on November 4 promising a pay rise of 11% just a day before the British Medical Association prepared a ballot to vote on industrial action - lasting two weeks.

But on Thursday (November 19), 98% of junior doctors voted in favour of full strike action.
