Speaking to camera he said: "Now as I'm sure you know a few days ago this city was attacked near London Bridge.

"I'm so sad when I think about all the times since I took this job that I've had to open the show talking about such atrocities.

"Trying to find the right words to say is impossible because there are none."

The star said the attack on Saturday (June 3) felt "incredibly close to home" as staff from the show were out in London at the time and they are all staying in a hotel close to where the attack took place.

He added: "Some people might say its a strange time to do a variety show from this city. I couldn't disagree more.

"A lot's going to happen here within the next few days.

James Corden, who was born in Hillingdon, said the attack felt close to home

"We're going to elect a prime minster in Great Britain and just behind that building there is the Houses of Parliament, a building that represents democracy - something that the people who carried out this attack hate.

"We're going to bring you the silliest, stupidest, most fun packed shows we've ever made for you to celebrate London and Britain and everything it has to offer.

"The people who carried out that attack would hate that too.

"I'm so proud to be broadcasting here from my hometown.

James has been paying homage to the spirit of the UK

"I'm proud to show off its beauty, it's diversity and its stoic British determination to let nothing or anybody stand in our way.

"This is not a country that feels afraid.

"Thank you for joining us on what we hope will be a memorable week in London, welcome to The Late Late show.

"It may be the worst weather in the world but it's still my favourite city."
