Winter is indeed coming, and councils across west London have said they are ready.

It comes after forecasters have predicted snow to arrive as early as next week, with temperatures expected to plummet.

Whilst some may get excited at the prospect of snow, many will be worried about travel conditions, but local councils have told getwestlondon that they are prepared.

“Residents can be assured that we are prepared to deal with any cold snaps or extended periods of cold weather that might come our way this winter," said Cllr Eleanor Southwood, Lead Member for Environment at Brent Council.

“We have good stock piles of salt and our gritting teams will be working tirelessly to make sure we provide the best quality service during times of bad weather ."

Cllr Southwood also advised people to keep an eye on vulnerable neighbours.

“I would also like to encourage people to look out for older and vulnerable friends, neighbours and relatives to make sure they are safe and well through the colder months ahead," she said.

Brent Council has said it has more than 326 grit bins on the streets, which are filled with salt ready for the frost.

And if that runs out? Well, they have an extra 1,100 tonnes of salt in stock.

Louise Raisey from Hammersmith and Fulham Council, said: "We are ready and have our usual preparations in place for gritting the streets."

Ealing Council has carried out a dry run of the gritting routes in preparation.

A spokesman said: “This year we have 4,500 tonnes of grit ready for winter and five gritting lorries and a snow plough on standby for when temperatures fall."

Concern of potentially hazardous conditions has been prompted by forecasters warning of a particularly cold winter.

The Met Office has forecast temperatures to drop as early as next week.

"Cold, with frosts more widespread next week," a spokesman said.

"Plenty of dry and sunny weather inland, but showers affecting coastal areas, giving hail, sleet and perhaps snow at times. Windy this weekend."

Looking further ahead to the end of November and into December the spokes man added: "There is a signal that the periods of more settled but colder and drier conditions will tend to dominate."
