Incredible footage has emerged showing the dramatic moment fighter jets were dispatched to a passenger plane bound for Heathrow Airport after it disappeared from radar systems.

The video was taken from a British Airways plane behind the passenger plane, which set off from Mumbai, India, on Thursday (February 16) and shows the jets shoot into the clouds alongside the plane.

The precautionary decision was made to send the aircraft after the Jet Airways Boeing 777 plane lost contact with air traffic controllers as it flew over Germany.

Uploaded onto social media, Cirrus Pilot wrote about the video: "The trailing British Airways plane captured the footage near Cologne Germany.

"The JA pilots saw the Eurofighters and after speaking over emergency frequencies the plane carried onto London."

A spokesman for Jet Airways told getwestlondon: " Contact between Jet Airways flight 9W 118, from Mumbai to London’s Heathrow Airport and the local ATC, was briefly lost while flying over German airspace.

"Communication was safely restored within a few minutes.

"As a precaution, the German Air Force deployed its aircraft to ensure the safety of the flight and its guests."
