These Christmas lights are breathtaking enough, before you realise the man who put them up has just one leg.

Nick Yates thought nothing of his disability when he decided to decorate the front of his house in East Road, Bedfont , with some 20,000 festive lights.

The 54-year-old, who lost a leg in a motorcycle accident 17 years ago, illuminated the facade to raise money for new kennels at Binfield Dog Rescue, in Wokingham.

"I've always put up Christmas lights but I put in a bit more effort this year because I really want to raise money for the rescue centre," said the former computer programmer.

"I started putting them up in early November and it took over a month. The fact I'm a disabled man with one leg means everything takes a bit longer.

"I try not to let the fact I've got one leg hold me back. I like to give everything a go, especially when it's for an excellent cause like this."

Mr Yates said he put all the lights up by himself, with only a little help from his carer's children, who would sometimes pass him lights or hold them in place while he fixed them to the wall.

As if the task wasn't hard enough to begin with, he was also contending with painful gout in his one foot and with fierce winds during much of November.

He says the lights will remain up until the 12th night of Christmas (January 5 or 6, depending on who you listen to) so he can raise as much money as possible.

He intends to do it all again next year, with plans for an even bigger display featuring a Santa's grotto to boost donations.

The display even has its own Facebook page, called East of Christmas Lights Bedfont, to help spread the word.

Mr Yates' handiwork is not the only magical Christmas displaying lighting up Hounslow this winter.

The House O' Christmas is back in Bedfont this year, including a new Disney-style fairy tale castle.

Its creators are raising money for the children's hospices charity Shooting Star Chase and for the Jaden Cornelious Foundation.
