One of the world's leading universities is holding a scientific extravaganza on Wednesday (March 16) for people to engage with some of their latest scientific breakthroughs.

Imperial College London is holding a Fringe Festival: a series of events to allow the public to interact with their research.

This week's event, The Atoms Family is an opportunity to try on the future of waterproof London commuter wear, make your own scented hand cream and turn London's waste wood into Biofuel.

They will also be showcasing new technologies that may help improve efficiency and combat climate change.

The event is to be held at the South Kensington Campus of Imperial College but they will also be showcasing their Wood Lane Development, dubbed Imperial West.

The 26,000 m2 building is due for completion in 2017 and will house the Chemistry department. As well as research facilities, the site aims to be an innovation district for London, combining the expertise of the university and local business to boost scientific innovation in the area.

The building will also contain 'hackspaces' where local schools and communities can interact directly with scientists to work on projects.
