When Brent council asked residents on Monday (September 25) to tweet them with their favourite spots it, received a barrage of angry comments about fly-tipping instead .

Unhappy Brent residents have been flagging fly-tipping as an issue in the borough and tweeting the council with photographs for months.

Many have expressed angry claims the council is not doing enough to prevent rubbish being dumped on Brent's streets.

Piled up bin bags, a thrown-away fridge and even a complete set of bedroom furniture have been left on pavements.

A dedicated group of exasperated residents flag fly-tipping spots to Brent council on a near daily basis.

On Wednesday (September 27) MaidaValeCowboy tweeted: "Another day in BrentCouncil on Malvern Road", accompanied by a photograph of an overflowing skip with bin bags and even a power tool dumped next to it.

Twitter user Mizzzbizzz user took a creative approach to highlighting the problem and made a collage of all the Brent fly-tips she had photagraphed.

A Brent council spokesman said: "There has been a rise in reported illegally dumped waste nationally, and unfortunately Brent is no exception.

"We take a zero tolerance approach to this crime and as one of the first local authorities to begin using the new legislative powers - issuing 60 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPN) for illegally dumping rubbish so far this year alone - we have been working with residents and businesses across the borough to proactively tackle this menace.

"Brent was recognised as having issued the second largest number of FPNs for dumped waste than any other local authority UK-wide."

The spokesman added: "The litter patrol pilot run by Kingdom was a success and bringing the service in-house will ensure that we can focus even more on serving the community and residents' needs and cracking down on illegal dumping and littering.

"Our strengthened Enviro-Crime enforcement team use all the investigatory powers at their disposal to gather evidence to identify and pursue offenders and anyone found to be dumping waste will be prosecuted and may even face prison."

"In addition to harsher penalties, all income raised from these FPNs have been used to sustain our enforcement efforts and to ensure much more surveillance at hotspots, including the use of new CCTV cameras, is put in place."
