HSBC branches are to close in Wembley Park and Knightsbridge this year, the bank has announced.

It is part of a wide range of closures which leaves up to 180 jobs across the country at risk.

The Wembley Park branch, in Wembley Park Drive, will shut in May 12, while the branch on 237 Brompton Road, will close its doors for the final time December 1.

Britain’s biggest bank is blaming the 62 UK branch closures on a rise in digital banking, and says it will invest heavily in this area.

HSBC said over the past five years the number of customers using its branches has fallen by almost 40%, with more than nine in 10 (93%) of its customers contacting the bank via telephone, internet or smartphone, and 97% of cash withdrawals being made at cash machines.

Francesca McDonagh, HSBC head of retail banking and wealth management for UK and Europe, said: “The way our customers bank with us is changing.

“More customers are using mobile and internet banking than ever before, innovation such as Touch and Voice ID has proved extremely popular, and fewer people are using branches.

HSBC announced last year it would close its Shepherd's Bush Green branch

“More than 90% of our interactions with customers are now through our digital channels – an increase from 80% last year.

“The decision to close these branches ensures a more sustainable branch network for the future as we continue to invest in our digital platforms and our people.

'Fewer but better branches'

“We will have fewer but better branches, with more empowered front line colleagues using a greater range of technology to support all our customers’ needs.”

To help support customers, HSBC is working in partnership with the Post Office so customers can continue to carry out their day to day banking, the bank said.

Wembley customers can use the Barn Hill Post Office in nearby Grand Parade, Forty Avenue, which is open seven days a week.

Knightsbridge customers can use a nearby HSBC branch at 102 Brompton Road, or go to the Knightsbridge Post Office on 6 Raphael Street.
