A school in Hounslow is set to nearly double in size after getting the go-ahead for a new building.

Kingsley Academy , which lies just north of Hounslow High Street, currently has 835 students but would be able to accommodate up to 1,400 in its new premises.

It was given permission on Thursday evening (December 10) by Hounslow Council 's planning committee to demolish all buildings at the site in Cecil Road and replace them with a five-storey school building and a one-to-two-storey sports complex.

The school argued the expansion would help meet the need for more secondary places in the borough, and the sports centre will be available to the public when not in use by pupils.

In a statement, the school said: "The new building will provide brand new facilities for the academy, replacing the old building that is no longer fit for the bold and innovative curriculum that the academy will provide for its students. It will house state of the art teaching spaces with brand new IT, arts, science and sports facilities in re-landscaped grounds.

"The academy aspires to provide an outstanding education for its students, and to establish a learning, enterprise and arts "hub" for the local community.

"Work is scheduled to begin on the site in February 2016 within a secured compound on the existing site. This will allow the academy to continue uninterrupted during the two year building programme."

Kingsley Academy changed its name in 2013 from Hounslow Manor School after converting to academy status, meaning it is no longer subject to local authority control.

The secondary school, which was the fourth of Boris Johnson's London Mayoral Academies to open, was this year rated 'requires improvement' by the education watchdog Ofsted , following its first inspection since the conversion.

More than 23,000 extra secondary school places are expected to be required across west London by 2024/5, including over 4,000 in Hounslow.
