More than 40,000 people from Hounslow and Ealing clocked up over 150,000 miles in a real-life health game - more than 170 times the distance between Land’s End and John O’Groats.

Residents, businesses, community groups and schools from both boroughs took part in the Beat the Street competition which saw pupils from a school in Hounslow crowned overall winners.

St Michael and St Martin’s RC Primary School in Hounslow managed to travel 11,000 miles by walking, running and cycling during the six-week contest, scooping the £1,000 Decathlon vouchers.

Meanwhile across the border in Southall , Khalsa Primary School pupils proved the fittest in their area having made it to 6,000 miles.

High scorers on the leaderboard also bagged prizes.

Head teacher Nicola Duggan of St Michael and St Martin’s Primary School said: “We are delighted to have won the Beat the Street Competition - our children, parents and staff loved the challenge.

"It has had a very positive effect on our whole school community, encouraging everyone to get out and about and walk the streets of Hounslow!”

Over the past six weeks people raced around the borough tapping special Beat Boxes on lampposts to score points.

This is the first time the competition opened up to people in Southall where 10,000 people collectively travelled 46,000 miles.

Meanwhile the contest, which has taken Hounslow by storm, saw around 30,000 people walk, run or cycle a total of 106,000 miles.

Councillor Corinna Smart, cabinet member for public health and leisure at Hounslow council , said: “Congratulations to each and every person who has taken part in Beat the Street.

“The competition has been very much the talk of Hounslow and Southall this autumn and we’ve heard from many people who say they will miss the Beat Boxes.

"However, if you’ve enjoyed Beat the Street, please keep up the great work and continue to build on the great foundations that you’ve made for your health."

Councillor Bassam Mahfouz, cabinet member for transport, environment and leisure at Ealing council , said: “Congratulations to everyone who has taken part in Beat the Street and especially to the children from Khalsa Primary who travelled a whopping 6,000 miles.

“Living an active life is one of the easiest ways to stay healthy and even though the game has officially finished, I hope that everyone who took part will stay active and keep walking, running and cycling.”

In previous games, St Mary's Catholic Primary School in Isleworth topped the leaderboard earlier this year with over 15,000 miles conquered, while Feltham Primary School proved fittest in the borough last year.

Councillor Hitesh Tailor, cabinet member for health and adults services at Ealing council, added: "Beat the Street will continue to keep people active in with more events, activities and initiatives planned in the coming months.

"So local families should make sure they keep hold of their Beat the Street cards and watch out for more fun ways to stay active.”
