Pampers has delivered its smallest nappy yet to a hospital to use for premature babies.

The Pampers Preemie Protection Size P3 is three sizes smaller than a regular newborn nappy and is designed specifically to meet the needs of the tiniest little babies, weighing less than 800g (1.8lbs).

Around 1,800 were donated Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital on Sunday May 7, ahead of deliveries to other hospitals around the country later this year.

Last month parents of premature babies spoke of their hopes for the future of their tiny babies born at the hospital , based near Hammersmith Hospital.

The nappies can be worn by babies who weigh less than 800g

There are approximately 60,000, or around one-in-11, premature births in the UK each year, and due to advances in medical science, survival rates of these little ‘miracle babies’ are increasing .

The new nappies are designed to minimise disruption to help with sleep, positioning, and medical care for premature babies.

Regular newborn nappies currently used by neonatal nurses have a wide core that can push babies’ legs apart, not allowing their hips and legs to rest comfortably, which 99% of nurses agree disrupts healthy growth and development.

Pampers has delivering 1,800 free nappies which can be worn by premature babies to Queen Charlotte’s & Chelsea Hospital

Neo-natal nurse and developmental specialist Cherry Bond said: “Premature babies have very unique requirements, which need to be valued and considered in every element of their care; the right nappy is no exception.

"The nappies that are currently available do not fit the smallest babies properly so are often cut and folded to size, which can cause discomfort and impede optimal development.”
