The saga surrounding a historic building in Shepherd’s Bush appears to be resolved after developers were finally given the green light for their plans.

Planning permission has been granted for a hotel group to transform the former Shepherd’s Bush Palladium building into new serviced apartments.

The original façade and historic details of the building, which was the famous Walkabout pub in one of its last incarnations , will be retained and an eight-storey building built upon it to accommodate 74 new apartments, along with commercial space on the ground and lower ground floors.

In 2015, applicants Dorsett Hospitality International had failed in a bid to transform the building, in a conservation area on Shepherd’s Bush Green, into a 16-storey hotel and apartment development.

Among the reasons given then by Hammersmith and Fulham council's planning committee was that the proposed building was too large and dominant.

But the same committee has given the revised application its backing, after Dorsett, a subsidiary company of Far East Consortium International Ltd, asked the community for its thoughts on future designs .

According to developers, the original façade and historic details will be blended with new brickwork to create a striking new Art Deco-inspired building, which will comprise a range of studio one-bedroom apartments and duplex penthouses.

The new building will retain and enhance the original's façade and historic details, with an added eight storeys for 74 serviced apartments

All apartments will be serviced by the neighbouring Dorsett Shepherds Bush Hotel.

The building, which is designed by award-winning architects Flanagan Lawrence, will sit between two Grade II-listed buildings - The Pavilion, which was formerly a cinema and is now a four-star Dorsett Hotel, and the live music venue The Empire, which was built in 1903 as a music hall.

As part of the plans, original light coloured terra cotta tiling will be matched and blended with glazing and solid brick elements to complement the neighbouring historic buildings.

The Walkabout in Shepherd's Bush before it closed

The grand pediment, the triangular upper part of the front of the building which has changed over time, will be restored back to its original 1923 design.

John Connolly, head of UK development at Far East Consortium Ltd, commented: “We are delighted to have obtained planning permission to transform the former Walkabout pub into desirable serviced apartments.

"The building is steeped in history and has played a pivotal role in the history of Shepherd’s Bush.

"We are proud to be able to restore its original details, most of which are covered up at present.

"The new building pays homage to its past but also gives it a future for many to enjoy for years to come.”

The ground floor of the new building will feature a restaurant linked to the Dorsett Hotel through a glazed courtyard entrance.

The lower ground floor will provide an entertainment space and café, with apartment guests also able to use hotel services including the gym, spa, two restaurants, bar and business centre.

Thirty-two bicycle spaces will also be provided.

Construction of the apartments, which will be available for short and long term lets, will begin in 2018 with completion expected in 2019.
