Southall's iconic town hall has been put on the market by Ealing Council after losing money on the building every year.

The town hall sits on the junction of High Street and The Broadway and operates as an Enterprise Centre, offering space for businesses and organisations to work.

Built in 1897, the town hall was used as municipal space for Southall Norwood District, which became a part of Ealing borough in 1965.

The Grade II listed hall was taken over and extended by Heathrow City Partnership, becoming an "incubator" space for local start-ups until the council took it over in 2009 due to financial difficulties.

Occupants included charities Southall Community Alliance, which supports local business and Helplink which provides free English lessons, computer classes and health support.

Organisations based at the town hall supported the local multi-ethnic community including Migrant Advisory & Advocacy Service, which provides legal advice to those who cannot afford it, and Home Instead Senior Care, a home-care company supporting the elderly.

Despite increasing rents and cutting costs, the council decided it was not financially viable to run the centre and decided to offer a long leasehold of the town hall at a meeting in December 2016.

In 2010/11 the Enterprise Centre made a loss of £55,000 but this was reduced to just £1,000 in 2015/16.

A council regeneration paper stated that much of the expenditure related to a problematic roof which was "in constant need of repair", accounting for 45% of the repair budget for the whole building.

An Ealing Council spokesperson said: “Following a cabinet decision last December we are now marketing a leasehold of Southall Town Hall.

"We welcome offers and proposals that will help us to secure the long term future of this Grade II listed building.”

A long lease has been offered by the council through commercial property agents Lambert Smith Hampton with the deadline for offers being Tuesday July 11.

Active use at the ground floor is a condition of the lease, to reinforce the high street identity, and residential use at the frontage is not permitted but has not been ruled out on upper floors and non-High street frontage.

The council has suggested work spaces, community facilities, a restaurant or bar, and other potential leisure use would be acceptable.

Southall Town Hall is just under half a mile from Southall station, served by TfL rail from May 2018 and Crossrail by December 2019.
