The patient left in a critical condition after a fire broke out in a Hillingdon mental health unit is improving in hospital.

A fire broke out in a first floor bedroom of the Riverside Centre in Pield Heath Road at around 9.25am on Monday (April 3).

The patient was taken to Hillingdon Hospital in a critical condition but is said to be improving.

A spokesman from Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust, which runs the unit, said: “We've been told the patient is improving but still in hospital.

“The room where the fire was is unusable for the next two weeks or so but re-plastering has started and the old plaster removed – four other beds are out of action for a while purely because of where the fire was and the repairs needed to that room.

“All the decanted patients are back or have since moved on.”

No other patients were injured during the incident and two staff suffered minor injuries but were back on duty the same day.

A statement from London Fire Brigade, released on Monday, said: “We were called at 9.25am and the incident was over for us at 11.36am.

“The first floor bedroom in the hospital was 10% damaged by fire.

“One adult was rescued by crews wearing breathing apparatus.”

The trust said they were contact families of all patients at the Riverside Centre after the blaze.
