A care home for the elderly could close as part of Hounslow Council's cost-cutting measures.

Heston House, in Vicarage Farm Road, Heston, would shut and the day centre would move to a care home in Bedfont, under proposals being considered.

The Labour authority, which is seeking to save £59m over the next four years, says the home is underused, with a third of the 53 beds currently unoccupuied. It also claims the '60s building is in need of refurbishment, which would cost up to £10m.

The council says there is less demand for places at Heston House because more older people are being supported to live in their own homes. It claims closing the home would save £650,000.

Should the centre close, the Roshni Day Care service based there would move to Sandbanks Resource Centre in Bedfont.

The council is already planning to close a day centre in Bedfont, for people with learning disabilities. It says savings are necessary due to a cut in central government funding.

Users of both services, and their families, are being asked for their views, with the consultation set to end on April 10. Councillors are due to decide on the home's future on June 16.
