A Harmondsworth resident blockaded the road access tunnel to the central area of Heathrow Airport on Thursday afternoon.

They were angry at yesterday’s decision by the Davies Commission in favour of expansion at the airport, to go ahead with building a third runway at the site instead of Gatwick.

Protesters parked a van across the inbound tunnel with a banner saying: “Residents Against Expansion: No If’s, No Buts.”

It referenced Prime Minister David Cameron’s opposition to a third runway at Heathrow, expressed in 2010.

Residents of the Heathrow villages said they were "traumatized" after receiving a letter confirming they will lose their homes.

According to the Davies Commission, at least 783 homes in Harmondsworth, Longford and Sipson will need to be demolished.

A local resident said: “I feel let down by Davies.

"He has seen the evidence, the communities it will destroy, the air and noise pollution, the carbon emissions and yet he’s ignored it all. Davies clearly doesn’t care about us, our communities or our health.

“Air pollution around here already regularly breaches EU limits, and the noise is so bad that our children can’t learn in school. We already suffer with an airport of this size, let alone a bigger one.”

The man intended the blockade to last 20 minutes, and could be the first of many direct actions to be taken against the proposed third runway, by various protest groups

He said: “We have been fighting this airport’s expansion for decades but enough is enough, this is our red line.

"We won’t let our communities be bullied anymore, or destroyed.”

The blockade of Heathrow's road access tunnel to Terminals 2 and 3 brought traffic to a halt for more than half an hour.

A Metropolitan Police spokesperson said: "Police are aware of a protest at Heathrow Airport and have responded."
