Passengers using Heathrow Airport are being warned of disruption caused by foggy weather across London and the south west.

It comes as around 100 flights have been cancelled at the airport following a second day of limited visibility .

The Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for ice and fog at 8am on Tuesday (January 24) which is in force for three hours until 11am.

A statement from Heathrow Airport said “persistent freezing fog” had resulted in approximately 100 out of 1,300 flights being cancelled on Tuesday, and is advising those using the airport to check their flight status in advance.

A spokesman for the airport said: “With Heathrow operating at more than 99% capacity, there are no gaps in the schedule that can be used for delayed flights and as a result, some passengers may experience disruption to their journeys today.

Heathrow Airport flights are being cancelled for a second day running because of fog

“Passengers should check their flight status with their airline before coming to the airport. As always, Heathrow's top priority is the safety of passengers and we apologise to those whose travel has been affected by today’s weather."

With extra precautions in place because of the fog it was “impossible” for the airport to maintain its normal pattern of a plane landing or taking off every 45 seconds, the spokesman continued, before apologising to the disruption caused.

Elsewhere, train commuters are facing a difficult day after freight train in Lewisham derailed causing major delays to the Southeastern network.

Among routes affected is the Hayes to New Beckenham line.

Southeastern said a shuttle service is being arranged on this line.

The operator said there will be no service from New Beckenham or Sidcup to both to London Charing Cross and Cannon Street.

The rail disruption is expected until the end of the day.
